Recently, I spent some time checking out just a few of the sights around the Haven.
First, I enjoyed gorgeous Bewabic State Park, in Crystal Falls. Right down the road from Haags Haven, this park is on 15 acres of shoreline on Fortune Lake. It has a rich Civilian Conservation Corps history. Some of it's CCC structures are still in use. This place is underutilized and incredibly peaceful.
I headed over to Sharrard's Logging Camp to learn more about the Iron River Township area. The Sharrard Camp, formed in the 1920's, is believed to be the last standing logging camp of the era. The camp is well cared for and the standing buildings are impressive. It was worth the stop.
I took the scenic backroads to the awesome little town of Norway. Don't miss the summer concerts on their Main Street or the really cool iron mine, a few miles to the east of town. Check out the Knight Owl Sports Bar. It is well known for its delicious chicken wings and great weekly specials.
Heading out of Norway, I took in the sights at Piers Gorge. Created by the Menominee River, this gorge produces Class lll rapids. Well crafted but sometimes slippery foot paths offer many excellent views of the fast moving water. I am talking majestic vista after majestic vista.
Heading back towards Haags Haven I stopped right off of Highway 2 to enjoy the delicious AWARD WINNING water bubbling up from Norway's artesian spring well. The well was incidentally created in 1903 while in search of iron ore.
Try the water. You'll see.
And there is one more place I like to stop right on Highway 2! I don't ever want to miss at least a glimpse at Fumee Falls in Quinessec. Easily accessible, it is just ONE of the many exquisite waterfalls of the Upper Peninsula.
Any trip to the UP is well worth it. Come up and see for yourself...
